Sharing Our SuccessTEN CASE STUDIES IN ABORIGINAL SCHOOLING
David Bell

Sharing Our Success presents insight into one of Canada's most pressing challenges - the education of its Aboriginal children. Based on detailed case studies of ten schools creating tangible progress for their students, this report describes a range of promising approaches with Aboriginal populations in diverse settings across five western provinces. Analysis of the data gathered in the 2003-04 school year from school administrators, teachers, students, parents, elders, and governing authorities yields valuable insight into practices for improving educational outcomes. The research examines important issues around school leadership and governance, expectations, strategic partnerships, holistic approaches to curriculum and programming, instructional strategies, and the integration of Aboriginal language and culture.

Sharing Our Success analyzes prominent success factors across the schools as well as systemic challenges found, and presents the implications for policy makers and practitioners with a set of recommendations in the final chapter. The report also offers a review of the research literature on factors known to affect educational success for Aboriginal students.

"Those interested in improving Aboriginal education will find helpful guides in this report. The Society for the Advancement of Excellence in Education (SAEE), the project Advisory Committee, and the authors are to be congratulated for producing research that honours the people, contexts, and experiences of the ten schools and their respective communities through sharing stories of success. These stories will enable others to learn, to reflect, and ultimately to improve Aboriginal schooling."
