Links to Literacy: Examining Phonemic Awareness Instruction in Kindergarten Classrooms
Sheridan Angerilli and Noralea Pilgrim A comparative study conducted in 2001-03 as part of the early literacy intervention program in BC's Maple Ridge school district. Eight Kindergarten classes were involved in the study in which 4 kindergarten teachers employed two different approaches to literacy instruction. Both 14-week interventions structured sequence of explicit instruction in phonemic awareness, with one being entirely oral based and the other text linked.

The report examines literacy outcomes for each group and their district peers at the end of Kindergarten and Grade 1, with particular attention paid to effects on children at-risk of reading failure.

Principal investigator was Sheridan Angerilli, who holds an MA in Psychology of Education/Learning disabilities. Links to Literacy was published by SAEE in cooperation with SD #42 in February 2004. The research was supported through grants from SAEE and the Vancouver Foundation.
