Schools That Make a Difference: Final Report
Dr. Norman Henchey Although previous research has looked at secondary school success, no large Canadian study has specifically examined urban secondary schools serving disadvantaged students. This report offers a cross-case analysis of the findings of a two-year study of secondary schools in low-income settings. The 12 schools were located in Montreal, Edmonton and lower mainland British Columbia. Both high and low-achieving schools were examined for comparison purposes.

Henchey's report presents a brief portrait of each school and an analysis of the patterns and behaviors found across the sample. A further chapter offers reflections on the challenges confronting contemporary schools in preparing all young citizens for successful participation in the global economy and democratic society. Implications of the findings are presented in the final chapter with a set of recommendations for policy makers and practitioners.

Twelve detailed case studies and a literature review were produced in separate volumes of the Schools that Make a Difference series.

Primary researchers included Dr. Claude Lessard, University of Montreal, Dr.Neal Muhtadi, Deputy Superintendent Abbotsford School District, and retired Edmonton Associate Superintendents, Muriel Dunnigan and Alex Gardner. The statistical work was completed by Dr. Claudio Violato, University of Calgary. The findings were synthesized by University of Montreal Professor emeritus, Norman Henchey. A comprehensive literature review on school effectiveness and improvement was prepared by Dr. Terry Wendel. The study was commissioned by SAEE and funded through the assistance of Max Bell Foundation.
