Integrating the Arts in Aboriginal Settings

Blair Stevenson

Walking Tall in the Hall

This study conducted in the spring of 2006 maps the implementation of ArtsSmarts projects in district schools working with aboriginal populations. Lead investigator, Blair Stevenson, conducted surveys and interviews at 15 schools across Canada to develop mini-case studies of ArtsSmarts in action as seen through the eyes of teachers, artists, students and community members. The report provides a snapshot of the impact of the ArtsSmarts projects in these schools. Readers will gain insights about what works, essential factors for success, lessons learned thus far, and how the projects might be replicated in other schools and communities who wish to incorporate the arts into the curriculum as a strategy to increase success for First Nations students. This SAEE research was commissioned by ArtsSmarts, with funding provided by Indian and Northern Affairs Canada.
