Principal Portraits

Ten public school administrators nominated for the Garfield Weston Foundation Outstanding Principals Awards share their strategies for improving school achievement. November 2001
Nancy Love

This study examines the role of the secondary school administrator in creating high academic achievement for students. Author Nancy Love profiles ten public school administrators nominated for the 2001 Garfield Weston Foundation Outstanding Principals Awards.

Five principals from Alberta and five from BC share their leadership philosophy, skill-sets, and management practices for creating significant increases in student achievement. Their shared stories provide insights and inspiration for fellow-administrators and those considering the challenges of school leadership in the contemporary environment.

Published in November 2001, Principal Portraits includes a literature review of school leadership, ten case studies, and a discussion of common themes, practices, values and challenges emerging from the study.

A former secondary principal, Dr. Love completed her doctoral work in educational administration at the University of Calgary. The research was commissioned by SAEE through a grant by Max Bell Foundation.
